City officials reviewed potential labor contract demands, showing police base pay and fringe benefits could rise 68 percent and paid firefighters by 17 percent. Harrisburg AP Republicans plan to trim Gov. Shapp’s 1971 72 budget by 270 280 million, with Democrats backing up to 130 million in cuts. Rep. Kenneth B. Lee leads the plan as talks occur in a session where a 3.8 billion spending total is under negotiation. The plan favors altered school aid formulas and a large reduction in welfare and mass transit spending while leaving some department budgets trimmed.
Harrisburg AP A bill to send 32 million dollars in aid to nonpublic schools was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Joseph F. Smith. The plan offers 75 dollar vouchers per child in grades 1 through 12, redeemed by school districts from the state, reducing public school subsidies up to 550 dollars per pupil while private and parochial schools may cash vouchers. The measure follows a Supreme Court ruling that overturned a prior Pennsylvania program which provided about 23 million dollars to nonpublic schools based on the number of nonreligious courses offered.
Police report a theft of 28 dollars in food stamps from Rosa Cross of 318 West Church Street. She named a suspect as officers investigate today. A separate report notes two lawn chairs stolen from Oscar Joncas of 506 Shady Avenue valued at 21 dollars.
Forty senators urge the Nixon administration to release promised funds for a nationwide child feeding program. They cite 18.1 million available this summer, 415 million less than needed, and warn millions of children in cities nationwide may go unfed. Senator Case notes New Jersey would only get 320,000 for 100,000 children. The program aims to help nearly two million children in inner city playgrounds and day camps.
The last holdout on stopping state income tax deductions appears to be Pennsylvania. State workers including liquor store employees and those in the Transportation Department still had taxes deducted, with Kennerknecht noting payrolls issued in Harrisburg were preprinted and the final deductions likely occurred before the Supreme Court struck down the tax. A worker’s remark about the computer system hinted at a speedup that could reverse.
Washington AP reports labor and management in the steel industry opened contract talks ahead of an August 1 deadline with President Nixon urging a constructive, noninflationary settlement. Neither side commented after a meeting with Nixon, amid expectations of hard bargaining and a possible strike. Officials noted industry profits fell 42 percent last year, with Japan and Western Europe as strong competitors and wage growth weak. A separate item notes a pickup truck crash leading to a total loss.

Burglars broke into the Pennsylvania Bank and Trust Co branch in Sugar Grove between noon Monday and yesterday morning and stole about 30000 from the night depository. They pried a rear door and damaged the safe dial. Investigators Trooper Myron Fernstrom and FBI Agent John Porter pursued the case. bank officials had no comment.
At 6 50 p m on Route 6 near oe way road intersection two trucks a pickup and a semi rig collided but drivers Arthur McChesney and Frank Briggs narrowly avoided a far more serious crash. McChesney 51 of Corry slowed for a stop sign and lost brakes then steered into Route 6 and west with the rig as Briggs moved into the eastbound lane. Both vehicles sideswiped and avoided a roadside collision.
