Postmaster Seeks Higher Rates for Business Mail

Washington AP Postmaster general Benjamin Bailar asks the Postal Service board to raise first class rates for business mail by three cents while keeping individual rates at 13 cents. He cites a request from President Carter for a citizen rate to be cheaper than business mail and notes a 10 month delay before any changes could take effect. Bailar opposes extending delivery reductions and envisions a five day week if a citizen rate gains support. The citizen rate would apply to individuals mailing first class letters domestically with specially printed stamps.
