Housing bill boom hoped to lift construction in 1954
A tentative Senate House conferee accord on the housing bill would raise loan values and lower down payments for government insured mortgages. The House version would set 95 percent financing up to 10 000 with a 500 down payment, rising to 1000 on 13 000. Senate terms varied but favored the administration. 1954 spending on new construction projected at 36 billion, with private housing starts near 1.08 million. Critics warn permits may slow, while builders cheer a strong market.
