Nixon signals possible Voting Rights Act extension compromise
The Nixon administration signals it will not oppose a compromise to extend the 1965 Voting Rights Act before tackling a broader voting rights package. Ford and Nixon discussed a sequence giving Congress first the extension, then the wider measure, amid Republican civil rights opposition and concerns the administration proposal weakens protections for Black voters in the South. Mitchell and McCulloch vocally opposed the changes, while Judiciary Committee members anticipated approval of the extension when debated on July 10.
