Cooking Can Control Calories
Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association advises that proper cooking, not merely choosing foods, reduces calories. Margaret Spader notes fat remains in foods fried at too-low temps and in rare or overcooked meats. Modern gas ranges with controlled heat lower fat use, reduce smoke, and improve oven results at lower temperatures, down to 140 degrees for safe serving without drying out.

Opponents of Gas Tax May Speak Before Panels
Harrisburg AP reports opponents and supporters of a proposed 2 cent gasoline tax increase and a $75 million state subway program testy before House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Lawmakers questioned Highway Secretary Park H. Martin on funding needs, noting that without higher taxes only $4.4 million would be available for a 20,000 mile state financed highway system and crucial bridge replacements could be delayed. The tax would raise about $74 million in the year ending June 30, 1962 to double interstate road construction and cover interest on a proposed $300 million borrowing plan to speed projects until federal payments resume.
