Impact of New Budget Felt in Erie County
Harrisburg reports 1956 federal budget would cost Erie County about 107 million in taxes, with Pennsylvania statewide impact estimated at 4.7 billion in direct and hidden levies. The plan debates Ike’s budget cut from last year and contrasts local tax receipts of 11 million in 1952 to the looming federal levy. The Pennsylvania State Chamber of Commerce frames the change as a major shift in tax burden.

Statewide and County Tax Burden Highlighted in 1956 Budget
A State Tax Equalization Board 1953 valuation shows county totals at 164,849,000. The state’s 1956 federal budget cost is over eight times all Pennsylvania local taxes from 1952. The 47 billion federal tax burden to Pennsylvanians equals about 70 percent of wages in manufacturing mining and quarrying in 1958 and nearly 80 percent of capital invested. The analysis, by the state chamber, attributes county shares to population retail sales property value and buying income.
