Vigorito Bill Aims to Save Erie Lackawanna Railroad

U S Representative Joseph P. Vigorito introduced legislation to allow bankrupt railroads like Erie Lackawanna to be reorganized under the Rail Reorganization Act of 1973. The measure would reclassify Erie Lackawanna as a Railroad in Reorganization, preserving service to customers in six states and major clients such as FMC Chemical Plant in Meadville. The bill comes as Penn Central and other lines are already under the act, and aims to prevent dissolution of Erie Lackawanna, which serves ports on Lake Erie and the Sharon to Youngstown area. The proposal seeks to extend reorganization provisions beyond Section 77 of the Bankruptcy Act, citing statute of limitations concerns.
