Keith Reynolds, an Austin insurance agent, testified he bought Johnson family TV ad time at Jenkins' suggestion, with insurance coverage rising from 100000 to 200000 over time. The panel weighs possible perjury and a direct conflict in sworn statements.
CAPE KENNEDY Fla AP Saturn 1 rocket lifted off at 11 25 a m EST on its first full scale test flight. The 164 foot tall booster weighed 562 tons and sent a 37 700 pound satellite into orbit, demonstrating U S space capability ahead of the Soviet Union. The second stage fired for the first time revealing a mass of metal and sand with a radio beacon.
Two Corry bar operators were indicted by the Erie County grand jury on establishing a gambling place from a State Police raid on November 14. Mrs. George Meerhoff and William Roehrig were named. Charles Elchynski, Clarence Edwards and Hubert Obert faced related charges. The raid involved 120 troopers hitting 96 establishments across Corry and Union City.
A 110 car Chicago to New York freight derailed in Ashtabula Ohio. Thirty cars left the mainline, four tracks blocked, and NYC passenger trains detoured via Nickle Plate between Ashtabula and Madison. No injuries. Derailment cause under investigation. Cars loaded with general merchandise.
Commissioner William C. Hill says county employees do not receive 11 paid holidays a year and that the claim is false. He cites eight holidays in a nonpaid sense for salaried staff and seeks to trim lunch hours from 90 minutes to 60. He plans mimeographed sheets to urge office heads to shorten noon breaks.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Walter Alessandroni says enforcing the minor cigarette ban statewide will be difficult. He will meet with Governor Scranton and Health Secretary Wilbur to discuss local enforcement and education. Wilbur urges a federal crack down and notes minors can still access cigarettes. Local agencies may be the key as statewide policing is impractical.
New York and several states ban cigarette sales in new buildings including hospitals. Some private hospitals remove vending machines and posters urge anti smoking messages. Independent radio WMCA will drop cigarette ads as officials push stricter rules to curb youth smoking.
Washington reports December price gains driven by weather damaged vegetables and higher sugar, food and housing costs. The Labor Department notes the consumer price index reached 107.68, with 1957 59 base costs at 10.75 for 10.
Harrisburg AP reports passenger cars and station wagons in Pennsylvania must display new inspecting stickers by midnight Friday or face violation of the law. Revenue Secretary Theodore Baith Jr. stressed there would be no extensions of the deadline.
Night brings record cold as Ol Man Winter returns after a milder spell. Corry sees four to five inches of snow with a brighter outlook as the U.S. Weather Bureau forecasts fair skies and a high in the mid 20s today. Snow flurries may touch parts of the upper Great Lakes. Sunrise was 7 30 a.m. and sunset 4 30 p.m.
Erie County commissioners reinstated Richard Cassell as herdsman at the county hospital farm after a wave of criticism of the new Democrat majority. Cassell had been fired a week earlier and replaced by a man who refused the job upon learning the discharge conditions. Also, Mary Reagan was named receptionist switchboard operator at $3120 yearly after the former operator was fired and a replacement could not start immediately.
In a Moscow note the Soviet Union said a U S Air Force T39 trainer was downed by a Soviet fighter over East Germany after ignoring warnings. Three U S officers aboard were killed. The crash occurred near Vogel village after the plane disappeared from radar while flying into East Germany during a storm. The United States said the aircraft lost its way.
Atlanta leaders grapple with new racial tensions as four days of demonstrations target Leb's restaurant over desegregation. SNCC's Jamce Forman says protests will press all city eateries open to Negroes. Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. convenes 250 officials to seek calm amid clashes.
The Corry YMCA prepares for its February 17 to 26 renewal drive aiming for 600 renewed and 150 new memberships, with current totals at 573 youth and 400 adults. Campaign director William Kafferlin led a steering committee meeting outlining final drive plans, including reduced rates and outreach to Spartansburg Union City Clymer Columbus Spring Creek and Sher.
Brenda Frimire, 17 months, was burned by her mother in an attempt to stop her from eating cigarette butts. John Frimire and Bonnie Frimire, both arrested on open charges, faced police after a neighbor reported visible burns on the child. Brenda was hospitalized with severe mouth and facial burns.
In Erie County court the Polish Club beer incident tied to Melvin Smith's suit against H D Corry and the club nears a new round. Judge James Dwyer previously awarded Smith 2000 dollars for injuries after a dousing and fall. Smith seeks a new trial or to reinstate the club as a defendant while his leg heals and medical work continues.
Charles H Bracken of Corry was elected president of The Marine National Bank of Erie at the annual board meeting in Erie. He had been named senior vice president after resigning from Citizens National Bank of Corry, where he served 16 years. He succeeds George J Schaefer who resigned after over 52 years with the Marine Bank. Bracken will direct operations at the main bank on State Street and branches at Liberty Shopping Center Powell Avenue Pine Avenue and Erie Central Mall. Bracken’s election followed his duties ending at Citizens Bank and was announced hours later in Erie. Enoch C Filer was elected chairman. Additional officers include a controller and other listed positions.
