The men squeezed through a one foot hole in the jail basement yesterday. Police believe the men separated after the escape.
A group of youths is summoned for February 7 physical examinations after failures to appear for action tests. The Central Hoard No. 4 lines up previously rejected selects for reexamination, with some minor offenders to be retested. They must report at 1:35 p.m. and travel by Pennsylvania Railroad to Harrishire for tests, returning by 4:20 p.m. on February 9.
Cairo police said five additional fatalities were located among the ruins from Saturday's riots and fires, lifting the death toll to at least 87. U S Consul Lamar Mullher echoed inquiries into American casualties while authorities assess hotel victims. Army patrols, curfews, and martial law shaped a tense city as Premier Aly Maher Pasha contends with demands to expel British troops and unite the Sudan with Egypt.
An advisory board meeting of the Salvation Army was held last evening at the citadel with 11 members present. Lawrence Davison, chairman, opened the session. Rivers crested forecasted levels near 95 feet at headwater points, with widespread travel disruption and economic losses feared in teens of thousands.
After severe rains the Columbus township bridge over Coffey Creek on Crosby road between Bacons Corners and Carrier road was repaired and opened to traffic. The bridge had collapsed when high water washed out an abutment. temporary fixes failed in turn but additional work cleared for use. A decision will come later on full repair or new bridge this summer. Two autos reportedly plunged onto the broken span with no injuries to occupants.
Washington, Jan 2 The Mutual Security Agency announces a $300 million emergency aid grant to Britain to bolster Western defense. W Averell Harriman says without this Britain would cut its arms contribution in half. Funds cover purchases, mainly in the United States, through July 1. Churchill had asked Congress for aid, with no new conditions, as Britain seeks to shore up dollar reserves amid postwar strains.
Jerry Savings and Loan Association reported historical growth from 730000 to 1003000 in assets over the past year during the annual directors meeting at Ballith Center street banking quarters. Directors Wallace Hammond Ed Simmons Nick Harton and J Davis were elected to three year terms. W H Giramings term expires January 1954. Officers re elected: Simmons president Davis vice president Stowe treasurer Hammond assistant treasurer Blanchard secretary Bulard assistant secretary. Appraisers Stowe Davis and Hammond named. alternate appraisers Simmons and Bulard. All 9316 shares represented.
Liz Ruth Coonan, 24, wife of a Fort Knox officer, was ordered by Federal Judge Roy Shelbourne to Valley Forge General Hospital for mental treatment after testimony that she believed God directed her to offer her children as a sacrifice. Four children were found butchered in the Louisville apartment on January 1. Lt. Joseph Coonan found his family slain with throats cut and himself wounded.
Denis W. Delaney former internal revenue collector for Massachusetts was sentenced in Boston to two years in prison and fined 10 500 on three counts. He received 7500 bribes and falsified tax returns totalling about 180 000. The sentence runs concurrently with two other counts and include 2800 fines on each other count. He awaits appeals with a stay of sentence.
A massive turbine wheel casting over 14 feet in diameter and weighing more than 60 tons was briefly moved through Corry railroad yards on a special flatcar. The prototype shipment traveled from the west via New York Central rails to Erie, then to Renovo at limited speeds before joining a diesel freight train en route to Norfolk.
Frigid conditions grip the city as temperatures plunge below zero after three weeks of milder weather. Morning sun offers slight relief but the mercury climbs slowly with forecast for another cold night and a drop to near zero. A mining accident in Cambria County leaves Joseph Jancsura, 61, dead after being struck by a car in Johnstown.

City police report two drivers Eugene Smith of Northwest Street and Dr W H Earnest of Spartansburg sustained no injuries after a collision on the Corry Spartansburg road around 4 15 yesterday afternoon. Smith said he was turning left into his home driveway when struck by Earnest driving east, the force sending Earnest’s car into a utility pole. Total damage unreported. In a separate Greensburg report a hunter’s body was found after a dog bark led neighbors to a Ruddsdale area woodland. Michael J Kosta, 31, apparently stumbled while hunting and was found with a snare gun wound in the abdomen. The dog was beside the body.
A House Judiciary Committee plan to probe the Justice Department and Attorney General J. Howard McGrath advances. The panel will be composed of nine members, with Democrats and Republicans, to limit scope to credible testimony and avoid a broader inquiry.
The House Ways and Means subcommittee began contempt actions against Harry Grunewald and attorney William Maloney after Maloney was escorted out for resisting questions. Grunewald refused to answer, citing constitutional rights, as Chairman King ordered quiet and police ejectment.
Suva Fiji reports a fierce hurricane with winds reaching 150 miles per hour. The three hour storm leveled concrete buildings, wrecked harbor facilities, and left hundreds homeless.
