Senate pressed for quick vote on Ike defense policy
Senate leaders urged a rapid tally on President Eisenhower’s Formosa defense plan while critics urged further debate. Ben Knowland urged voting today, and George of the Foreign Relations Committee warned against delaying the resolution, which would authorize defensive measures for Formosa and the Pescadores. The White House said the plan is strictly defensive, aiming to reassure allies and deter aggression. Some senators argued the resolution could be read as authorization for preventive war, prompting further discussion before a final decision.
