Harrisburg AP reports Senate quick confirmation of Gov Lawrence's three appointees to Pennsylvania's new Harness Racing Commission. Chairman Robert Fleming says they will be confirmed to unsalaried posts next week. Appointees: Lawrence B. Sheppard as chair, Ally Martin J. Cusick, and Edward J. Kane. Cusick and Kane are Democrats, with Sheppard a Republican veteran breeder. Doubt raised about pari mutuel tracks for 1960 season persists.
The Corry Area Council of Churches condemned obscene mail after a boy reported receiving such letters. The group discussed World Day of Prayer at First Presbyterian with Mrs. Frederic Irvin as speaker on March 4. They touted Dial-A-Prayer results, costing 200 dollars yearly, and urged local merchants to publicize it. The council thanked Corry retailers for Christmas Keep Christ efforts and planned to contact more churches for wider cooperation. A noted surgeon, Dr Max Thoriek, died in Chicago from heart failure after a long career.

A Corry motorist escaped injury when a west bound Erie Railroad freight struck his car at the unprotected Shady avenue crossing near Corry. Andrew Howell 26 of Weab Pleasant street said he braked as the train approached and the right wheel brake grabbed, stopping the front left on the tracks. Engineer Robert Copeland said whistle signals began 1,900 feet away and another whistle and air brakes were applied before impact. The driver credited the brake with saving his life. The crossing was previously tied to a near miss involving a Columbus school bus. The Erie division did not file a local report. The Corry school board later moved to seek Baressi’s release as bus driver after a separate incident at the same crossing prompted an investigation and calls for signals and lights.
Paris AP report says Gen Maurice Challe and Paul Delouvrier promised the army will not fire on insurgents dug in behind barricades in Algeria. Premier Debre rushed to Algiers then back to Paris after secret talks with Challe Delouvrier and 10 Algiers deputies as the crisis deepened. Continued on Page Eight.
Washington AP reports the Senate House Economic Committee majority accuses Eisenhower era policies since 1953 of hampering growth and raising unemployment and prices. Republicans call the report unbalanced and partisan, while proposing alternatives including reforms in fiscal monetary policy and direct farm subsidies to address crop price support problems.
Cuba's justice minister Alfredo Yabur warned in a televised address that millions of cadavers would follow if U S Marines landed in Cuba He blamed a foreign ambassador for offending Cuba and cited reports of 10 000 Marines at Guantanamo. U S officials denied the claim and planned amphibious exercises at Vieques Island Puerto Rico.
Police say 55 year old Robert Ivine admitted striking 91 year old John Senter in Brooklyn on January 4 and fleeing. He allegedly did not stop to avoid spoiling his 26 years of perfect driving record.

Corry police learned a 16 year old girl from Corry has been missing since Saturday and reportedly headed for Los Angeles with a small group. Police said no report had been filed by her parents at first, then sought details from the East Fifth Street home. The teen was later linked to several adults and a possible route toward a Basco Valley Boulevard area in Los Angeles, with relatives and others named in the evolving inquiry.
A blaze at Gateway Center Building No 4 in Pittsburgh damaged about one third of the second floor of a 22 story, 16 million dollar skyscraper during final construction. Estimated damage reaches 375,000. Workers’ shanties and equipment on the floor were also affected as fire crews fought the blaze. No injuries reported.
