Cold Weather Prevents Flood In River District
Oil City’s upper Allegheny valley avoided a serious flood as cold weather kept river levels from rising above danger. The Allegheny crested at 21.4 feet near the city pumping station, then declined to about 20 feet 11 inches by midnight, with pumps aiding basement drainage in North Side and Thint wand districts. Some cellar flooding occurred along Seneca Street, but merchants moved stock to higher shelves and prepared for continued cold conditions.
