Tiny transmitter could blanket towns in peacetime and war

A compact 42 centimeter wavelength transmitter demonstrated in Pittsburgh could enable hundreds of broadcast stations nationwide in peace and wartime. Developed by Mouromtsen, Kijgers, and Philpott at the Westinghouse lab, it uses 20 times the power of prior units yet runs from a 10 watt socket. Its short waves act like light and require little extra gear to receive on standard receivers. Placed on a town tower, signals reach across the town with strong reception.
