Base closings eyed to save Pentagon funds amid political pressure
The Pentagon plans a new round of base closings and force reductions to save about 500 million dollars annually. Services submit lists, with final decisions pending. Lawmakers from districts fear job losses in a weak economy, while Clinton era context hints at broader resistance. The defense budget is set to rise by 6 to 7 billion next year, sustaining 451 U.S. bases and 323 overseas along with numerous smaller sites.
