New Offer for Muscle Shoals Submitted by Congress
Washington Jan 24 a new offer by the American Cyanamid Company for fertilizer power and equipment at Muscle Shoals Alabama was presented by Rep Madden to fix Dill. The plan guarantees production of fertilizers annually containing at least 48 000 tons of fixer nitrogen an increase of 8 000 tons over the original offer. Madden urged the military committee to favorably report noting it is better than Henry Ford proposals. He said 48 000 tons of nitrogen equals about 200 000 tons Chilean nitrate and would supply nitrogen for 2 400 000 tons of fertilizer annually. The company would furnish all patented processes royalty free. Madden attacked the Associated Power Companies office and said the Muscle Shoals commission exceeded its authority in recommending acceptance. The bid would not meet Ford’s offer and conflicts with national defense aims by providing fertilizer in peacetime and nitrates in war.
