Two Indiana county coal mines were ordered shut temporarily by the U S Bureau of Mines under a new federal safety law enacted after the Mannington mine disaster in West Virginia that killed 76 people. The Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Co. mines in question lacked limestone rock dust, an anti catalyst for explosive coal dust, according to the investigation.
Air Force pararescuemen from Hickam Air Force Base jumped into the Pacific about 700 miles southeast of Hawaii to aid two badly burned sailors from the Yugo Slav cargo vessel Miho Pracat after a coal gas fire. The men sustained serious burns over most of their bodies in the incident Wednesday.

Erie City Council last night refused to authorize payment of nearly 5000 for repairs to the Model Cities Agency operated by Parade Street Lumber. The vote followed about an hour of questions directed at Model Cities administrator Alex Pelinsky about noncompliant procedures and the lack of federal funds for the emergency work.
