Lefty-crosshanded Owens Leads Tucson Open After Round One
Charles Owens, who grips crosshanded with his left hand lower than his right and cannot bend his left knee, tied for the lead with George Archer at seven under par 65 in the Dean Martin Tucson Open. Also in contention were Lou Graham and J C Snead at 66, with a large group at 67 and Lee Trevino at 71 amid warm, favorable scoring conditions. Owens, a Fort Bragg veteran and former 82nd Airborne member, spoke of his unorthodox swing and family ties to golf while pursuing his first major victory after late entry to the touring tour in 1970.
