Train Clips Truck At Eagle Street Crossing

A tractor trailer driven by Joseph W Heenan of Tidioute was struck by a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train at the blind Eagle street crossing near Rogers Structural Steel Co. The same truck and driver were involved in a similar crash the previous Saturday. Two dead and three injured in five recent rail crossing incidents on Elk Bond Eagle Colta streets.

Fire kills mother and five children in Oswego County home

Valera Petrie 95 and her children Susan 8 Gary 13 Bryan 1 James 6 Barbara 4 perished while 17 year old son and father survived. A 12 year old and other children escaped. fire started from a heater in the dining room. The 40 year old Tunis Petrie was treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

Nuclear Sub Rescues Two After Plane Crash

The nuclear submarine Triton rescued two men from a life raft after a civilian charter plane ditched 100 miles southeast of Nassau Bahamas. A third occupant, John Stenko of Sarasota, is missing. The plane, piloted by Harry Chance, was en route to Georgetown British Guiana when trouble arose.

Ship San Ni cola sinking. 30 crew escape in lifeboats

The Liberian freighter San Ni cola, 442 feet long and carrying scrap from San Francisco to Portla, sent a distress message 770 miles northwest of Honolulu. Thirty crew members aboard took to lifeboats as two planes and a responding ship searched for them. The Coast Guard and vessel owner Sores Steamship Co. reported information as weather details remained unclear.

The Pennsylvania Railroad won state approval to discontinue passenger service on the Erie to Emporium run known as trains 580 and 581. The line loses 150000 dollars yearly as passenger use fell to almost nothing. mail service shifts to a truck run via Altoona and DuBois to Erie, with two daily Erie to Corry trips. The Public Utility Commission cited adequate bus service and rising auto use, with a 60 day notice before removal.
