Dems To Back Pardon Board Probe If Criticism Is Removed

In Harrisburg House Democrats say they will support a pardon board probe only after a Republican backed resolution is revised to remove criticism of the board. Rep. HG Andrews said the investigation should not be prejudged and objected to phrases implying political consideration influenced the board’s commutations. The issue stems from the death row commutations for Davey and companions after a Bucks County tavern holdup in December 1997. The House plans to resume after a recess for the State Farm Show and may debate the resolution. Lt. Gov. Roy Furman, board chair, welcomed the probe, while Rep. Albert W. Johnson signaled likely committee action on related bills and a Korean War veterans bonus proposal. The session also contemplates constitutional amendments on absentee voting, tax funding for farmers, and limiting legislative sessions as it moves toward the governor’s budget.
