STATE LEADS IN TREE FARMS IN PENNSYLVANIA

Jan. 3 HARRISBURG Pennsylvanians now lead in forest farm certification as the state reports strong growth in tree farming since the movement began Oct 1 1949. Secretary M Dunehiel announced that 149 farms in Chester Butler and surrounding counties have been certified by the Department of Forests and Wales. He cited a central PA farmer harvesting 5000 board feet annually from a 10 acre woodlot and reinvesting lumber into buildings while selling plywood and parts worth hundreds of dollars yearly. The effort promotes forest management as a crop and aims to expand private timber farming across the state.
