Frigid Wave Hits Philadelphia Area and Snow Impacts City
A severe cold snap grips Minnesota and nearby areas as temperatures plummet below zero. In the midwest, motorists face citations for ban violations amid icy West Main streets. Funeral services are held for Andrew Sevok Jr. in Sheffield with military honors. Updates include mumps cases, bread knife shortages after a ready sliced bread ban, relief payments rising in Erie county, and a new governor settling into the executive mansion. Police investigate a Stroup Service Station break-in, while Jamestown hosts its poultry show. FCC approves reduced long distance rates, and navy casualty lists are released with standard next of kin notices. A state disaster drill tests center readiness, and a local court hears a cruelty case with insufficient evidence.
Draft rules broaden deferments to aid farmers
Local boards in Kansas and neighboring counties gain authority to grant deferments for agricultural workers. New guidelines let individual production define a unit of essential farm output such as milk cows and acre yields, with boards setting deferment standards up or down. The change, drawn from Agriculture, War Manpower, and farm groups, adds more products to the essential list for production.
