City of Corry council approves an ordinance banning motor driven vehicles on public sidewalks or parkways with limited crossing allowed. The measure, mirroring Union City, aims to curb snowmobile misuse, aid police, and reduce property damage and pedestrian conflicts.
City treasurer Mrs. Mary Hubley reported last night that investing idle city funds yielded 20 495 dollars for the year, with 13 264 from time certificates in the special account and 3 082 in accrued interest. Other funds added smaller sums, and earnings may drop in 1971 as interest rates fall. Erie police state they are near an arrest in the December 28 kidnapping of a Conneaut woman. Gary Leech, year old, of Erie and formerly Union City, is wanted by Conneaut police on kidnapping charges and by state probation for parole violations and the FBI for unlawful flight. Det. Lt Charles McCurdy said he urged Leech to surrender after a 50 minute phone call.
Jamestown fire crews battled a Saturday night blaze at the Jamestown Post Journal. The fire started in the stereotype room on the third floor and spread to an adjacent advertising alley. Smoke filled most of the building with water damage in the library and art department areas.
Corry Golf Commission faced high bids for a second nine at North Hills. Low bid $126,100 from Wurst Brothers Erie. second bid $145,120 from Moore Golf Inc. of Culpepper Virginia. Costs likely push total to about $137,000, well above the $100,000 target. City Council will decide after options include rebidding, financing, or building four holes to relieve peak play.
