Small Increase Registered in Pa Relief Rolls

The week ending January 10th shows a net rise in Pennsylvania relief rolls with a total of 72,428 cases housing 143,127 people. About 28,000 cases include a member considered employable, while 26,000 general assistance cases are only a fraction of all DPA rolls which total roughly 195,000 elderly and aid recipients, plus 101,000 old age assistance, 56,000 aid to dependent children, and 14,000 blind pensions. The rise stems from 1953 openings and 1819 closures, with WPA changes muting the net impact by 315 cases. WPA activity nonetheless reduces general assistance by 112 cases as workers move to private jobs or WEA openings, while 434 cases roll onto aid due to WPA lay-offs.
