Population of deer remains high in Big Forest
Warren, Jan 19 The deer population on Iluheny National Forest stays high at about 40,000 across 726000 acres, with more than 20,000 deer taken by hunters during the open season. Acting forest supervisor G D Spinney notes the herd could face a winter shortage as the population stays large despite growing harvests and female fawn crops. The State Game Commission and Forest Service warn hunting may be restrained if the herd is not reduced to sustainable levels.
