Nine New Forms of Takes Before Pa Legislature

Harrisburg January 18 Nine new forms of taxation are outlined before the Pennsylvania legislature, despite leaders vows of no new taxes. Legislators push taxes on utilities, foreign corporations, county income, state income, special automobile license tags, foreign car insurance, chain stores, and malt syrups to fund community needs. To offset, bills seek to extend the emergency sales tax and cut the gasoline tax from three to five cents per gallon. Utilities taxes would apply to electric light and power and natural and artificial gas utilities. Fitzgerald urges a chain-store tax with fees paid by corporations owning multiple stores. McElwee proposes a new method to assess county taxes by totaling potential annual property income and actual net income, setting a cap at two percent.
