Appeals Filed in Erie Hit Milestone Count
Erie residents filed just over 450 appeals by the Saturday noon deadline on the 1954 triennial assessment. Chief Assessor Richard Ruth and Mayor Arthur Gardner called the figure a triumph for the program, noting 3,000 appeals were filed in the 1951 re assessment. Gardner said he expected 800 appeals and credited a low number with winning him a bureau pool. Ruth said there were no surprises among the late surge.

Erie man linked to fatal crash and child abuse case
Erie resident Russell E. Adams was driving the car that struck and killed Democratic leader John Massello last November 6. Adams also faces aggravated assault charges for allegedly beating his three year old daughter Linda Lou and remains in county jail on $2,000 bail pending. Traffic investigator Charles Berger said Massello walked into Adams’ path near 17th and Liberty streets, so no arrest was made for the fatal crash. The Detroit Police Department was noted for installing radios in patrol cars.
