Record cold envelops vast U S region from Rockies to Atlantic
A severe cold wave blanketed the eastern half of the United States with sub zero readings from Minnesota to New England and freezing temperatures reaching the Deep South. Minnesota reported 15 to 25 below zero with forecast highs near zero, while Georgia and the Carolinas saw freezing marks. The cold disrupted schools and raised fuel shortages coast to coast. In Ellwood City Pennsylvania, Clark Alexander, 14, died from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by gas fumes leaking from a furnace, killing his parents and two sisters as well.
