Italian planes bomb hospital in Ethiopia attack

Italian aircraft bombed a Red Cross hospital caravan at Waldia north of Desaye killing 16 and wounding about 40. The caravan, led by British former army major Burgoyne, saw tents and medical gear destroyed as wind spread fumes over town. A British unit heads north to assist the Red Cross and residents.

Youth Held for Court in First Ward Burglary

Foster Henry, 19, of East South Street, is held for Erie county grand jury on a February term theft charge after a burglary at Capt. Teresa Wagner’s Grove Street home. He was jailed in default of 500 bail after a hearing before Alderman Porter. Henry fled town and returned days later, with entry via a window during Salvation Army services. He has prior reformatory time and faces re incarceration.

Avalanche Buries Train Wreck Traps Cars Injures Eleven

In near zero cold a snowslide toppled the Sierra Nevada snow shed on the Southern Pacific main line at Colfax California. The westbound Pacific Limited was halted as 11 men were injured and three passengers rescued after the slide crushed the second car from the rear. Rescue crews rushed from Truckee to aid the scene and the injured were moved toward San Francisco aboard the damaged train.

State Highway Patrol Substations Planned This Spring

A new sub-station of the state highway patrol will be established in Corry this spring with two patrolmen. A Troop headquarters will open in Franklin with Captain J. M. Bender in charge. WPA to take over relief distribution in two weeks

The Emergency Relief Board will transfer food and clothing aid to WPA control within two weeks. N B Broadhead, commodity distribution chief for SERB, will stay in charge of the 233,000 relief families under WPA, as Edward N Jones notes. Corry Woman Is Given Sentence in Tax Offense Case

Mrs. la Haines was sentenced to sixty days in Erie county prison and ordered to pay costs after pleading guilty to possessing untaxed intoxicating liquors. Police raided her Mast Street home last month finding a 20 gallon still in operation and quantities of illegal liquor on the premises. Judge William J. Hirt deferred final sentence to investigate the evidence.

Defense seeks new evidence to save Hauptmann

New evidence potentially overturns the conviction of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and murder. His defense lawyers filed a habeas corpus writ and a motion for a stay of execution as they press last-minute appeals in New York and New Jersey.
