Baker Case Could End Next Week
U S District Judge Oliver Gasch told jurors the Bobby Baker trial could conclude by mid next week, far sooner than the original estimate. The government said it could finish its case against the former Senate Democrat secretary on tax evasion, theft and conspiracy. A defense motion to dismiss may be argued after the government admitted it electronically eavesdropped on Baker. The Justice Department confirmed two conversations were bugged in March 1905 but said the recordings did not relate to the indictment.
