Snow sleet and freezing rain paralyzed highway travel across the Midwest and South as subzero cold tightened its grip on the Northeast. Twelve states were under winter warnings while central and southern Kentucky Nashville Tupelo Miss Chattanooga saw several inches of snow. Ice and sleet followed the storm eastward with power crews working to restore outages in eastern North Carolina.
City Council opens the new year with a full agenda tracing back to a 1967 dispute over garbage contracts with local manufacturing plants. Clare Capwell will take oath as parks and public property director, with renewal of city assessor William Miller expected for four years. Downey leads talks on a new hydrant at Spring Street and Airport Road and a shared police and fire HQ between the Municipal Building and Fire Station 1, possibly with Civil Defense. Mayor Furst reports on the Western District meeting.
Fire losses in the Union City area totaled 177 750 for last year, up sharply from 21 485 in 1968. Chief Francis Wontenay notes 73 calls with 41 in Union Township and 7 outside assists. Five fires were major blazes with 125 250 in township and 51 500 in the borough. One fatal blaze occurred in the borough.
GRAND ISLAND Neb AP state boards of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren churches approved forming a new church. A building will be erected as the congregation grows. Dr Jim Chubb pastor of Trinity Methodist in Grand Island notes the merger seen as an adventure and a step toward unity. The merger will occur at a world meeting in Dallas Texas in April.
Doctors in Cape Town reportPhilip Blaiberg and Louis Washkansky show improving vital signs with relaxed tests to aid rest. In California Mike Kasparek nears a week since his transplant, while Louisville plans a transplant within a month and Beirut awaits a donor at the American University Hospital.
Three Groves men W J Morvant Richard Morvant and Paul Bailey rode out a seven day Gulf of Mexico storm in a 19 foot boat armed only with canned sausages a six pack of beer and belief they would be rescued. Coast Guard Legare crew spotted them near Freeport after a long trek through 10 foot swells. Rescued men wore borrowed Coast Guard clothing and returned to cheering relatives including eight of Bailey’s nine brothers who paused bricklaying to help search Sabine Pass coves.
Adult education program at Corry Area High School expands for winter with a diverse course list including Foods and Their Preparation Health Beginning French Beginning Drawing American Government and Astronomy among others. Registration requires at least 15 signups and occurs February 5 at 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium with classes meeting weekly for 12 weeks at ten dollars plus materials.
In South Vietnam a CH53 helicopter crashed into a steep peak near Dong Ha on Monday night. All 41 aboard are feared dead. Rescue attempts were hampered by rain and fog as weather prevented ground or air insertion. Mortar fire later killed six Marines and wounded 16 at Phu Bai, where Marines from the 5th Regiment bolstered defenses in the northern provinces.
A rural road crash near Union City involved Mrs. Melvin Lange and her daughter Mrs. Marguerite Sanden, both of Union City, with Gerald Hinkson of Erie. Lange skidded on ice into a parked car, Sanden then collided, and Melvin Lange swerved his pickup into a ditch to avoid another collision. No injuries, total property damage about 200.50 to Lange and 50 to Sanden.
The 1967 vital statistics report by registrar Sidney Elston shows births in Corry Elgin Borough and Concord and Wayne townships fell slightly while deaths rose. In Corry 307 births occurred 170 male 137 female with 133 to residents, 134 deaths 71 male 63 female including 9 under one. Heart disease led with 57 deaths. cerebral hemorrhages 29. cancer 12. pneumonia 9. other causes and stillbirths making up the rest.
A man was shot in the back and killed early today at the Tourist Ton near Hallam in York County. Police said the body was taken to York Hospital. the victim was identified as James E. Delhamer. His age, address, and shooting details were not immediately available.
AP reports strong winds fueled a blaze at the Perry Shop Ping Plaza in Erie destroying a supermarket a loan company a drug store a bakery and a bar. Firemen fought the three hour blaze with 250 plus personnel as hoses froze and water sheets iced the ground. No injuries were reported and authorities expect losses to exceed one million dollars.
Six western Pennsylvania college juniors permanently blinded after lying on their backs and staring at the sun during an LSD induced trance. The incident prompts a federal state by state survey to identify similar cases amid a UCSB episode last May where four students lost reading vision under similar circumstances. Health officials cited policy questions on jurisdiction for delaying earlier study.
