Zip Codes Change Mail Rates and Zoning System

A new postal system based on Zip Codes will start January 15, raising parcel rates by about 10 cents and introducing a zone based on distance from sectional centers. Beginning July 1, size and weight increases apply to first class mail, with Erie center zones using first zone rates. The change aims to streamline routing, replacing directory lookups with graphic charts and Zip Code prefixes. The plan could add $74 million annually to postal revenues, with further gains projected future years.
