Nearly 500000 in unemployment compensation checks were handed to jobless in the Corry labor market area during 1957, according to Paul Heusley, manager of the local Pennsylvania State Employment Service office. The year saw fewer available jobs than 1956 and more applicants. There were 362 placements in 1957 from 458 openings, with 112 employers using PSES services and 1067 applicants referred. The 1957 placements broke down into eight professional and managerial, 38 clerical and sales, 31 service, 25 skilled, 68 semi skilled, 72 unskilled and entry, and 72. Agricultural work rose, 58 farm-type positions vs 20 in 1956. Two technical specialists were placed, not in Corry. The office conducted 495 telephone solicitations and 71 employer visits.

Crime Expert To Aid Woman In Area Slaying
FRA Neayer-2e euampping general consul in New York and a noted Filipino criminologist are expected to come here to discuss the defense of Mrs. Lydia Dean who is charged with the murder of her American husband. Mrs. Eugenia C. de Deen, mother of the 21-year-old Mrs. Dean, said she received a cablegram from Estanislyo Fernandez, an attorney in the Philippine Islands. She said Fernandez said he would try to arrive before the week of January 27th when Mrs. Dean will go on trial if she is indicted by a Venango County grand jury. Mrs Deen also said the Filipino general consul had hoped to come sooner to see her daughter but that illness has delayed him. Mrs Deen flew 10,000 miles from One Philippines two weeks ago to be with her daughter who is being held in the county jail for the rifle-singing December 7th of her husband, Ronald, 29, an Air Force technical sergeant.
