Rescue workers press on after a series of deadly snowslides. At least 135 remain missing while authorities confirm 85 deaths so far. The danger of further slides and harsh weather hinders search efforts. Local officials urge caution as teams comb avalanche zones for survivors.
Rescue workers in Austria, Switzerland, and Germany search for the missing after the Walser Valley avalanche. As death tolls rise across Austria, Switzerland, and Bavaria, hundreds are feared buried while helicopters bring aid and supplies to isolated villages.
Fugitive key witness in the Reuther shooting case, Donald Ritchie, surrendered in Preston Ontario and was taken into custody. Police escorted him toward the Windsor border for extradition to Michigan. Ritchie, sought for years, disclosed his identity in a downtown restaurant and waived extradition with Detroit officials.
The Chamber of Commerce reports 85 memberships secured by nine city firms across industries banks and utilities as part of an ambitious drive toward 300. E F Bettes secretary notes this milestone shows major executives support a more aggressive chamber and its plans. Robert A Ott Sr to head the industrial development committee to lure new industry and business. The committee has aided the Howard Tannery move back into production and has contacted 10 arms seeking relocation or expansion, focusing on sound business.
At the annual meeting held at the South Center street bank, Citizens National Bank disclosed total assets topped 7,000,000 for 1953. Stockholders, representing 7,081 of 8,000 shares, approved capital changes, a 200,000 capital stock, and a par value cut to 25 from 100. The year saw a bank pension plan, remodeling completion, and a trust department with assets over 1,500,000. Dividends of seven percent of par were declared. Directors G W Donaldson, W L Peake, H W Loveland, B W Feldt, S J Irvine, D B Taggart, and C H Bracken were reappointed, with officers O W Donaldson as president and C H Bracken as executive VP and trust officer.
Andre Troquer, a 69 year old one armed socialist attorney from Paris, leads the new French National Assembly after a last night election with Communist aid. He is second in prestige to the president and has wartime service in World War I. He reportedly favors a European army in principle but has not moved to push it.
United Nations and Red liaison officers plan to meet at Panmunjom to restart talks toward a Korean peace conference. Kenneth Young said the aim is to set a date for political discussions, with the Reds insisting only on scheduling, not broader conditions.
Democratic national leader Pat Stephen A. Mitchell accuses President Eisenhower of distorting tax, inflation, and farm price facts in a State of the Nation address. He notes rising cost of living every month except November and claims farm prices fell in all but three months, saying farmers lose billions since 1953.
Proposals to link the Hebron natural gas field in Potter County Pennsylvania with the New York Connecticut pipeline and the Harrison storage field in Potter County and Steuber aeiah have been filed with the Federal Power Commission. Three applications seek authorization to provide additional natural gas for Kentucky Pennsylvania New Jersey New York and metropolitan New York through an 87 082 607 program. Tennessee Gas Transmission Co Texas involved in all three applications proposes to expand and extend its system at about 33 671 000 to provide the additional gas.
Washington says the Army will call 18,000 men in March matching February quota. Since September 1950 the selective service has drafted or earmarked 1,643,000 men for involuntary service.
H Martin Keppel was elected vice president at the National Bank of Corry during a reorganizational meeting. Directors re-elected include H M Keppel and H W Powers with Joseph W Guignon, Barney B Snyder, Worth Hammond, and Barbara K Treat all serving as directors. Officers named: H L Keppel president, Joseph W Elem vice president, H M Opel vice president, H W Powers cashier, M Lillian Murray assistant cashier, Walter J Kep pel teller. A transfer of 50000 from undivided profits to surplus was authorized and the regular dividend was declared.
Harrisburg report notes 55 Keystone State Farmer Degrees awarded by the Pennsylvania Future Farmers of America at the 1954 State Farm Show midpoint. Notables include Miles Horst state agriculture secretary and Milton S Eisenhower president of Pennsylvania State University.
The deadly cold front stretches from the stormy northeast across the Rockies into the South with no relief in sight. Skies clear and winds ease in the northeast as temperatures fall, with the cold reaching as far south as Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi and a rising death toll in the East.
The Corry district endures a biting cold with a low around 10 degrees and little thaw. Snow totals reach about four and a half inches on the ground, while the Northeast braces for more storms and record low temperatures across Maine New Hampshire and New England.
Corporators are notified the Corry Community Chest will hold its annual meeting Thursday January 21 at 7 30 in the Municipal Building. Three directors will be elected for three years including Lloyd Lanphere George Nagel and Billstrom. The board will reorganize after the meeting to elect officers for the coming year. In Greensburg Pennsylvania production curbs at Robertshaw Fulton Control Co have furloughed about 800 workers since mid 1983 with about 100 laid off at the Youngwood plant yesterday.
Wilton Henry Semuers, 39, of Clymer Center Route was killed instantly while trimming a limb on a neighbor’s farm. His brother Gilbert Schrums witnessed the accident as a tree limb snapped from the top striking him on the forehead. Coroner Samuel T. Bowers ruled accidental death from a fractured skull. Surviving relatives include three brothers Marvin Schrums Gilbert Schrums and Kenneth Schrums and a sister Mrs Tyan Legters. Funeral services set for Abbe Reformed Church with burial in Clymer Center Cemetery.
Secretary of State Dulles pledged against any division of world power between Moscow and the Western Powers. He outlined basic Cold War policies, including unity with Britain and France to press for German unification and Austrian liberation, and warned that only a free world can deter the Soviet bloc. He cited a secure alliance posture, nuclear deterrence, and continued European defense efforts while urging bipartisan support for prudent long term policies.
Two elderly brothers Henry W. B. Cox 70 and Alva O. Cox 86 were found dead in their Mars farm home. Coroner J. Clinton Atwell ruled exposure likely caused by Sunday’s six degree temperatures. younger Henry seemed to have died suddenly in bed while Alva was found near a fireplace attempting to start a fire.
An intense earthquake rattled cities from the Mexican border to Sacramento, with Harvey damage reported across Los Angeles Tehachapi and Bakersfield. Telephones failed, lines snapped, and a bank wall cracked while a Caltech seismograph logged the event for over a minute. The Garlock Fault is cited as epicenter alongside heavy rain hail and snow across Southern California.
President Eisenhower, at a news conference, called the preliminary atomic talks with Russia encouraging but not yet conclusive. He tied the discussion to his proposal for an international atomic energy pool for peaceful purposes and touched on domestic issues. He defended the farm plan as workable and practicable and left Congress to decide the sequencing of labor law elections on strikes.
President Judge Allison Wade was shot to death this morning in his Warren County courtroom by a defendant named Norman Moon of Connellsville. Moon fled toward Irving underpass after the shooting and was wounded by state police near Starbrick. He later shot himself in the throat when cornered. Wade died from his injuries in Warren General Hospital. Witness District Attorney Myer Kornreich described the confrontation and pursuit through the city. The incident occurred during Moon’s failure to comply with a 4 40 weekly support order. The pursuit involved state and borough officers. the killer’s car was halted as police fired at tires.
