Limits Could Hamper Troop Pullouts In Vietnam
Washington AP Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird fears a congressional cap on Vietnamization aid could slow future U S troop withdrawals and weapon handovers to South Vietnam. Officials say the $2.5 billion ceiling, once near current spending, may constrain ramping up military aid as Nixon aims for self reliance, though current pullouts aren’t jeopardized. Laird urges Congress not to impose arbitrary limits and warns against accelerating American withdrawals without adequate South Vietnamese prep. He noted an upcoming Saigon announcement identifying units to be pulled out, including one Army division and several support elements, as part of Nixon’s third troop withdrawal order.
