Oil City flier saved by Filipino guerrillas during rescue

A World War II era account recalls an American flier saved by Filipino guerrillas after a crash landing. He parachuted, heard rifle fire, and was sheltered by villagers while a rescue mission approached from 26 to 80 days later. The tale notes leeches, fatigue, wounds, and the wary questions villagers asked of the Americans. The rescuer Beard reflected on caution and the human costs of survival.
