Hindenberg Drives Against Warsaw Amid Wartime Clashs

War news from Berlin and Petrograd reports General von Hindenberg has begun a renewed drive toward Warsaw as heavy artillery and frozen ground enable intensified operations. Federal Prisoner Holt Escapes On Pittsburgh Train

United Press reports Robert V Holt, 34, a federal prisoner, escaped from a moving train near Pittsburgh Pennsylvania station. Holt was being transported from Chicago to New York for trial on fraud charges related to Guggenheim interests.

Great game at Armory last night between Stars and Crescents

The Winter series opener at the State Armory ended 36 to 21 in favor of the Stars under Captain Brows. Frank Raeder pitched fast, with strong support from teammates including Tom and Robert King and Captain Brown who led base running. Crescents, led by Captain Wellman, fought hard though errors and strong Stars hitting, with umpire Walter Riis of City League fame overseeing the game.

Concord Man Will Enter Suit Against Pittsburgh Instruction Co

Dorr McCray, badly injured earlier near the Ormsby crossing of the Pennsylvania railroad, is expected to sue the Pittsburgh Instruction Company for damages. McCray, driving when his team took flight from railroad equipment stored nearby, sought amicable settlement but efforts failed.

New York Broker Fails Shoots Self

Stringer Junior, of Stringer and Company at 40 Wall Street, shot himself in his brokerage office after admitting to exchange obligations. He died before help reached him. The firm’s failure wiped out both his and his father’s fortunes. the market barely reacted.

Britain lifts embargo on rubber reshipment restrictions

Washington January 3 Britain lifted its rubber embargo on shipments from the United States under certain safeguards. The British embassy announced that large shippers must bond and certify their cargo and its destination, with a ship to product route through the United Kingdom, marking a concession to American business interests.

Leg Crushed When Large Tree Fell Near Mayville

Accompanied by V A Stebbins and Dr Waterhouse of Mayville, Mr Stebbins, about fifty, was severely injured when a large tree fell in the woods between Mayville and Sherman yesterday afternoon. His right leg was crushed below the knee and the limb bone shattered. He was brought to the county hospital on the evening train and treated by Dr C B Eller. This morning he remained in serious condition but with the shock of the accident endured. doctors hoped the leg might yet be saved.

Aged Man Found Murdered in West Brownsville

Charley Moffitt aged 60 was found dead in his bedroom in West Brownsville Pa. He had been murdered with a crushed skull after a brutal struggle. The room showed blood and most furniture was broken. Police believe the murder aimed at robbing him.
