Pay Board Debates Aligning Cutback on Aerospace Raise
The Pay Board held another meeting to decide how much of a 12 percent aerospace pay raise should be cut back, a proposal sent back for reworking by labor and management. Public member William Caples warned against predicting figures, noting the board’s divisions and lack of guaranteed agreement among dissenting members. Pay Board overrules unions on 51-cent wage veto in aerospace disputes
The Pay Board, excluding labor members, vetoed a 51-cent an hour raise for over 100,000 aerospace workers, deeming the total wage hike too high under the new wage price control law. Union leaders criticized the decision, vowing strategy talks in St Louis with no immediate strike plans, while noting prior assurances were not kept.
