Detroit Black Power Group Rejects Ford Grant
Detroit’s Rev. Albert Cleage leader of the Federation for Self- Determination refused a $100,000 Ford Foundation grant offered through the New Detroit Committee. He cited strings attached and warned of further unrest if Black communities are not given self determination. Two militant New Detroit members resigned, and the federation cut ties with the committee. Hudson hoped to meet Cleage to discuss the impasse. Cleage said the group would accept white money but not white leadership, declaring the plantation days are over.
