Postal hike may not suffice says top official

Washington AP A senior postal official cautions the newly approved 900 million dollar yearly rate rise might still fall short of balancing the Post Office budget. Assistant Postmaster General Ralph W Nicholson cites a current 644 million dollar deficit and projects fluctuations through 1970 even with the higher rates and stepped pay raises for 450000 workers. He notes the rate hike aims to cover higher priority mail while lower classes still subsidize public services and non profits. First class mail would reach about 110 percent of its cost, with air mail above 100 percent once all new rates take effect.
