Continental Can Strike Settled Sets Pattern for Others
New York reports of a strike settlement at Continental Can Co may set a pattern for ending the American Can Co walkout. The 14,500 workers at 36 plants will receive a package raising wages 15 cents an hour plus an 8 percent general raise, after unions sought 21 cents and Continental offered 4 to 5 cents. Union officials forecast broader impact with 20,000 workers at 40 American Can plants, and a meeting with American Can executives was requested for Friday.
