Crawford County Considers Tax Levy Increase in 1966

At the first 1966 meeting the Crawford County commissioners weighed a possible one to two mill tax hike to fund operations next year. A one mill rise would yield about $75,000 with current assessed value around $75.19 million. Costs foreseen include $10,000 for civil defense expansion, $3,500 for two new voting machines, and additional funds for the medical health center. The county already collects 10 mills on real estate plus a 3 percent per capita tax and a four mill personal property tax. 1965 personal property revenue hit a record $200,000. Assessed value is set to rise by about $1 million, boosting potential revenue to roughly $10,000 at 10 mills, $11,000 at 11 mills, or $12,000 at 12 mills, but no levy action will occur until the budget is prepared.
