Bolling Drops Bid as Democrats Win Ease Major Split

The move clears the way for Cass Adelbert of Oklahoma to likely lead the party, with John W. McCormack’s looming election as speaker. Halleck’s path for speaker remains unlikely. Bolling said he had 70 to 80 solid votes and 30 to 40 possibles, not enough to win, and blamed liberal defections. The party eyes a possible new policy committee to give liberals more voice, possibly meeting with White House influence.
