Fire Sweeps Berwick Stores Killing Man in Leap
A January fire swept through a block in downtown Berwick causing one death from a leap from a third story window and leaving another man missing. Firemen fought freezing temperatures as flames damaged Morton House and several shops, with damage unofficially exceeding a million dollars. Harry Brown, 61, an American Car and Foundry employee, died from crushed chest injuries and smoke inhalation. The blaze began in the bar area of the Morton House and spread rapidly across Front Street, with responders from Shickshinny Bloomsburg Orangeville and Nescopeck arriving as ice formed from freezing water and dense smoke created a smog. The blaze was under control shortly before 6 a.m. with one missing believed seen in a burning structure.
