Five Million To Get Pay Hikes In 1956
Washington reports about five million workers will receive automatic pay raises in 1956. The increases raise the national wage bill by a billion dollars or more, as unions negotiate boosts or the federal minimum wage rises from 75 cents to a dollar on March 4. Raises range from 3 to 30 cents per hour, with some as high as 26 cents under the higher minimum. Over 20 million workers under long term contracts will gain in the year, mostly in southern states, largely in the second quarter, potentially boosting purchasing power and mitigating inflationary risk.
