Scholarship Fund for Prostitutes Opens in Seattle
Seattle officials start a $1,500 scholarship fund for women convicted of prostitution in the past five years. Judge Charles Z. Smith notes limited hope for success, with only one applicant so far who aims to study counseling after high school equivalency. The program, administered by the Seattle Municipal Probation Service, requires college or vocational enrollment and a cross‑agency board to award aid.

20000 Will Receive UMW Pensions Now
Washington AP reports that up to 20,000 retired miners or widows will get annual pensions this year of at least 1000 dollars under a settlement in a three year old suit against the United Mine Workers Welfare and Retirement Fund. The plan revises eligibility, requires 20 years in the industry and five years in union mines after 1946, and sets minimums of 1800 dollars for ex miners and 1000 dollars for widows with retroactive benefits for past applicants. The first year payout is at least 52 million dollars, from two class actions.

Erie County launches drive to seize long overdue fines
Erie County Clerk of Courts Byron Clapper reports progress in collecting unpaid court fines. Judge George Levin ordered a December 1969 convict to pay 126.27 within 30 days or face contempt. A February 1971 case was given 90 days to act. Clapper says many dockets hold decades of unpaid fines, including 1954 bribery trials.
