Navy Relieved of Fuel Duties After Southeast Asia Theft
Heightened thefts of 5.5 million gallons of fuel and lubricants bound for U S Army and Air Force units in Thailand in 1967 led to the Navy being relieved of all further responsibility for fuel deliveries in the region. GAO blamed bribery forgery and lax oversight. 52 percent of diesel and gasoline shipments to Thai service stations disappeared. Defense officials say Army will replace Navy fuel inspection in Southeast Asia, a move tied to long planned reforms, not the thefts. John McGee who exposed the thefts says Navy superiors warned him not to discuss internal fuel office operations.
