BELLEFONTE Pa January 3 Two inmates escaped from the penitentiary today. Prisoners Harry Burrows 25 and John Kontilak 23 were working near a barn when they slipped away. Warden T Hood said they were traced to Spring Creek about ten miles away and likely headed into nearby woods.
Bonapartists negotiate with the Vichy government in France for the return of Napoleon's great grand nephew aged 90 to become ruler of modern France. The Count of Montfort, Louis Napoleon Jerome Victor Emanuel Marle, would need the repeal of a law barring male descendants of royal lines from France.

VICHY France January 3 The cabinet was reorganized with Admiral Jean Dalam General Charles Huntwiger and Pierre Etienne Flasiditi taking broad powers under Chief of State Philippe Petain. Paul Baudouin secretary to the presidency of the council resigned, reportedly due to the reorganization, and would be reported without power. The resignation was announced in an official communique.
Lansing Jan 3 A report cites former Governor Laren Dickinson urging the legislature to curb vice and liquor as the new administration of Gov. Murray D. Wagoner and the body seeks to realize strong state reform. The remarks follow a departure shot from a departing official.
