Privacy Act Approved By President
President Ford signs a privacy act to shield citizens from improper federal record use and names James T. Lynn to head the Office of Management and Budget, while returning from a ski vacation to tackle economic and energy policy. He orders a CIA report, vetoes a travel allowance bill, and sets up energy research funding, framing the act as balancing individual rights with open government and national security.

Yellow Watermelon Draws Notoriety
DOYLESTOWN, Pa. AP. All-America Selections promotes a yellow fleshed hybrid watermelon named Yellow Baby. Derek Fell notes its color and sweeter taste, 70 to 75 days to ripen, 50 percent fewer seeds, and higher flesh. It is a cross of New Hampshire Midget and Wan Yu Chen’s Yellow Baby. Seeded directly in groups six feet apart after frost danger ends. The nonprofit test network based near Doylestown, founded 1932, runs 32 flower and 25 vegetable trials. Breeder advice from Taiwan says ripe melons produce a distinctive sound when tapped.

Good Year Ahead Steel Faces Inflation Import Pressure
U S Steel Chairman Edgar B Speer foresees another solid year for domestic steel in 1975 but warns that higher profits are needed to boost capacity. He says without better returns, demand will push users to import steel at a premium, citing last year’s 1 5 billion inflation cost. Speer expects 100 million tons shipped domestically in 1975, driven by energy, shipbuilding, and rail industries, while auto, appliance, and housing demand remains weak. He calls for renewed investment to expand capacity by 25 30 million tons by 1980 and criticizes unnecessary environmental restraints as inflation accelerants. He notes US Steel plans five million tons more by 1976 and mentions the Gary Indiana plant shut due to pollution fines. Crown Zellerbach raises newsprint price in western Canada by 45 a ton effective Jan 1 1975, with U S markets affected.
