Callup Of National Guard Was Biggest Story Of Year In State
In 1950 the Pennsylvania National Guard callup emerged as the year’s top story as thousands of locals entered active duty after Labor Day. The first casualty list followed a fatal rail crash near Coshocton, Ohio, killing 33. Governor Duff’s political clash and GOP rift fueled a dramatic primary season leading to November’s election. A Pittsburgh strike wave and coal miners’ layoffs added further turmoil shaping the year’s headlines.
