State relief rolls continue steady decline in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania general assistance rolls fell for the sixteenth time in seventeen weeks ending December 1 as 3,041 cases and 928 persons were removed, while 4,928 cases and 10,867 people were opened. Total rolls stood at 204,985 cases and 600,558 persons, down from the 1890 peak. Net private employment shifts increased rolls by 416 cases, even as WPA turnover and related factors trimmed them by others. Total assistance expenditure reached 1,455,725 dollars, up 25,919 from the prior week due to adjustments in cancelled checks refunded from earlier weeks.
